Qualifications

Physician licensed to practice in Maine, and certified by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) or otherwise qualified through education, experience, and training in addiction medicine.

Duties the rule assigns

  • Assumes responsibility for administering all medical services, either directly or through delegation to authorized physicians and healthcare professionals under the Medical Director's supervision
  • Reviews and approves all treatment plans at least annually, in writing
  • Reviews and approves all opioid treatment program policies, in writing

Notes

Applies specifically to Opioid Treatment Programs (OTPs) dispensing methadone/buprenorphine, not to office-based MAT (e.g., buprenorphine prescribed by an individually-waivered/DEA-registered clinician outside an OTP) โ€” verify which model a given addiction-medicine client operates under before applying this. Maine's rule incorporates the federal OTP framework at 42 C.F.R. ยง 8.12.
