Massachusetts: what a medical director of a long-term care / assisted living / group home must do
Whether Massachusetts requires a physician medical director for a long-term care / assisted living / group home, the qualifications you need, and the duties the rule assigns.
Qualifications
Physician. For Specialized Nursing Care Facilities for Children (SNFCs), a pediatrician experienced in developmental disabilities must also be appointed.
Duties the rule assigns
- Implement resident care policies and coordinate medical care in the facility
- Advise on medical and resident-care policies
- Review admission and discharge procedures
- Oversee medical records management
- Ensure emergency medical care protocols exist
- Evaluate the facility's overall resident-care program
- Spend at least 4 hours/month in the facility on supervisory/advisory functions (staff physicians may share this time commitment with the medical director)
Notes
Applies to facilities licensed to provide Level I, II, or III long-term care under 105 CMR 150 (skilled nursing through rest-home-level care). Massachusetts Assisted Living Residences are licensed separately (under EOEA/651 CMR, not 105 CMR 150) and were not confirmed to carry the same medical-director requirement — verify which licensure track a given facility falls under.
